The interim period requires improvements to existing facilities to bridge the gap between growing demand and shortfalls in facilities, so as to ensure that customers are not lost to competing rival ports.  Such losses would have disasters impact on the future of the Port of Colombo. This was the reason for SLPA to initiate actions for extension of JCT IV berth at Jaya Container Terminal to enhance the capacity of Port of Colombo to accommodate the Mega Container carriers now in operation and due to be added to existing fleets during the next year or so. With the SLPA in house resources the Detailed Design has been completed. With the implementation of this projects it is possible to berth two 8000 TEU Container ships simultaneously at JCT III and JCT IV.
